Congratulations Mr Bracks we've whales in the bay!

Blue Wedges spokesperson Jenny Warfe says: “Congratulations go to Mr. Bracks for not allocating any funds in next year’s budget to channel deepening. Delaying the channel deepening project so far has shown us that we don’t need to squeeze in even bigger ships with even more stuff from overseas for us to buy.

Recreational fisherman and Blue Wedges member John Willis is very pleased that these two hump backed whales were cruising in the Bay just off Pt. Lonsdale yesterday morning.  John says: “It’s always a great feeling to see whales so close to home, but what’s even more amazing is that if The Rip was being dredged now as originally planned, there’s no way that these beauties would have been anywhere near the Bay.”

John, who is also chair of the Fishing Party, says: “Seeing the whales yesterday proves that the Bay is an amazing natural resource which we just have to recognise as an irreplaceable economic asset as well. It is our greatest resource for recreational and commercial fishing, tourism and eco-tourism, sailing, beach-going, sightseeing – what would Melbourne have to offer if the Bay was a just a dirty harbour like so many other bays near big cities around the world? Good on you Mr. Bracks for thinking carefully about what we stand to lose”.

Household debt is now running at approximately 130% of household income, largely because of our spending spree on imports. The social and economic realities are that we cannot continue on like this without a lot of stress and family misery in the future. Let’s do more to protect Aussie jobs making Aussie goods!” and “Seeing these whales – our near relatives so close by but totally reliant on us for the state of their environment, makes you realise that there is a whole lot more to life than pushing even more profit through to a few captains of industry”, says Ms. Warfe.
