Bracks Out- Foxed on Port Plan

State government’s recently released Port Development Plan has certainly raised concerns from a broad range of stakeholders.

Mr Lindsay Fox has launched an attack on the Bracks Government’s draft Plan, criticising channel deepening and plans to upgrade the Port of Melbourne.

Melbourne Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market Users spokesman, Mr. Jeff Thomas congratulated Mr. Fox, saying “There is widespread concern about the ill considered Government and PoMC strategy, it’s policy on the run with little vision. The plan has not demonstrated that the proposed Market re-location to Epping is justified. It is just not true that Epping is the most central accessible site for a new market location. It isn’t; 2,500 growers, wholesalers, retailers and distributors from all over the state would be disadvantaged by the move” said Mr. Thomas.

Blue Wedges spokesperson Ms. Jenny Warfe commented that Mr. Fox had identified some obvious flaws in the Bracks Government’s proposal. “We need a much broader perspective to the transport, freight and shipping debate in Victoria than the blinkered and narrow view in this plan. The Bay is under threat, the Market users will be displaced and we will still have an over- congested Melbourne if we adopt the PoMC’s plan for the future” said Ms. Warfe.
