Mother and daughter walk to save bay!

The Save the Bay signs on our backpacks have attracted a lot of attention from motorists with lots of toots and waves every day- the feeling against channel deepening is very strong in local communities around the Bay.
Mother and daughter team Robyn and Michelle Curtain are still on the go, walking around the Bay raising awareness about the risks associated with the State government’s proposal to deepen the shipping channels in Port Phillip Bay and the Yarra River. They have made it at least half way around from their starting point at Queenscliff, and aside from a complete drenching in the recent downpours have been thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Says Robyn “The locals have welcomed us in every town we have stayed at, and we’ve collected lots of signatures on our petition against channel deepening”. Daughter Michelle says “The Save the Bay signs on our backpacks have attracted a lot of attention from motorists with lots of toots and waves every day- the feeling against channel deepening is very strong in local communities around the Bay”.

“We are making sure people realize that the trial dredge was only a tiny part of the total project – and that the remaining 95% of the project should never happen. The damage done at The Heads in removing 30,000 cubic metres of rock was shocking – imagine the potential damage from removing 500,000 cubic metres of rock, as planned. The rockfalls during the trial prove that the dredge failed to remove rock at The Heads within the PoMC’s own environmental guidelines.”

“We should also be very concerned about risks to the entire Bay and businesses that rely on it if our beautiful clean water and beaches are threatened by the removal of 40+ million cubic metres of sand, silt and habitat from the Bay and river floor.” “If we don’t do something the dredge will be back to do a whole lot more damage next time around” says Robyn.
